A Message from Easter Island?********Canoe

Two days ago, a customer came in to the gallery where I work and sat down to chat as I was ringing up his order. Somehow we got on the subject of racism and bigotry and how stupid and ridiculous it is. He sited an example I had never heard before. He said that Easter Island was inhabited by a people (Polynesian, I think) that had many years of peaceful existence, until they divided up into two "tribes" that started fighting each other. The tribes were almost identical in appearance, except that one had longer earlobes than the other, and they based their hatred on that point.

I don't know if that story was true or not (I haven't researched it yet), but what happened that night made me wonder:

I went straight from work to a restaurant and read a book while I ate. It's called "The Eighth Day," by John Case (great thriller, by the way!). It has nothing to do with Easter Island, but somehow the author got off on a tangent where the main character stumbles on information about Easter Island. He tells some of its history--how the people had a peaceful existence on the island until their population grew too large, they used up most of the resources, and they began warring with each other. He didn't talk about the earlobes, but still--hearing about Easter Islanders warring with each other twice in one day (when I had never heard about that before) made my hair stand up.

What's weird is that I wrote another USM post about a similar book experience having to do with a dream I had several years ago. My life seems to be filled with strange coincidences like this, and I'm not sure why.

Canoe 3/10/2005 10:18:00 AM Sorry, there's bad grammar in there. I make it sound like the Easter Islanders warred with each other twice in one day, lol.
Canoe 3/10/2005 10:19:00 AM Another weird coincidence: I just noticed that it says "Find great Easter stories on Angel Feather" at the bottom of the page!
Princess Rhiannon 3/10/2005 10:24:00 AM LOL @ your earlobes!!! I personally don't believe in coincidences, so I think that's very strange.
Canoe 3/10/2005 10:29:00 AM Rhiannon, I've also learned to question whether there are coincidences. I'm getting the feeling more and more that everything happens for a reason, kind of like Carl Jung's "synchronicities" or meaningful coincidences.
wishin for more gray 3/10/2005 10:45:00 AM there are no coincidences in life 8-)
Hagatha 3/10/2005 11:31:00 AM ROTFL @ the earlobe thing.
TippyPawz 3/10/2005 11:32:00 AM I love the mystery of Easter Island...I want to go visit there one day....that will be a miracle lol
DanL 3/10/2005 12:06:00 PM It is not so much that you have any more confidences than other people, it is that you are a person that connects things in your mind. Serendipity is always all around us. most people just don't connect things the way you do. I am speaking from experience because like you I see patterns and connections that others miss. It is a part of the way my mind works. The good side of this is that you are probably a good problem solver and have a strong imagination. the down side is that you will see patterns that will cause you to be unhappy and worry a lot. Some times it will seem almost as if you are paranoid. But it is not that, it is that you see these patterns and put them together where others are oblivious.
Beags 3/10/2005 12:29:00 PM I like this post because I'm an Anthro. major and we talk about stuff like this in our cultural classes all the time! Thanks for making me brush up on my kinship/social organization studies! -Beags
greenclover 3/10/2005 12:41:00 PM That's pretty weird. -GreenClover
Canoe 3/10/2005 6:11:00 PM Thanks for all your answers! Funny you should mention that, Author 63080. Recently I took my first IQ test, and it showed that my strongest capability was in recognizing patterns. And everything you mentioned after that is true also--strong imagination and an ability to solve problems. Author 62849, I was a geography major and took a lot of anthro courses, including one on the people of the South Pacific. I seem to remember that the people of Easter Island (Rapanui) were Polynesians related to the Tahitians, Hawaiians and Maoris of New Zealand. The languages are somewhat related, too. It's been a while since I had those classes, so I could be wrong.
DanL 3/10/2005 6:39:00 PM It's not unusual that people who do certain things have common characteristics. I have a fascination with psychology and am a student of human nature. I recognized what you were experiencing because it is something that I see and understand in myself. The IQ test you took also placed you above 125 most likely too. Sorry I forgot to put my name on that last post I am new here and it hasn't become habit yet. ~DanL~ like DanL Boone.
Thankyou! 3/10/2005 8:48:00 PM Hmm I'm not sure hwat it all means but I am sure there is a reasoning behind it. Perhaps it's telling you to go to easter island cause your ears are just the right size? :P Maybe you are jsut meant to learn more. Ghost-chick
Celtic River 3/11/2005 11:01:00 AM This is interesting. When things like this connect, I think its a message, but I don't think you should clip your earlobes, maybe get an earring *smiles* Celtic River
Canoe 3/13/2005 10:42:00 AM Thanks again, all! DanL, yes, I scored 136. Most of the questions were pattern-recognition, and I just flew through those. It was an online test, so I'm not sure how valid it was. At the end, it said that my best scores were in pattern-recognition, math and language. I seem to remember that all of the questions were related to those areas. Ghost-chick and Celtic River, I used to think that my ears were "too big," and I used to hide them under my hair. A while ago I decided that I liked my ears and now always have my hair cut to show them off! If the Easter Islanders don't like them, they'll just have to deal with it, hopefully without killing me. (A footnote about the book "The Eighth Day" that I mentioned above: The main character is an artist, and he's preparing for an art exhibition. I just finished reading a part where he comes up with the idea of creating paper mache Easter Island heads with the faces of TV personalities on them. That's the second mention of Easter Island in the book.)
Jez 5/3/2005 10:10:00 AM interesting! i just saw something about this on the history channel. i see a lot of concidences, too. some are complex like this, with connections as varied as anias ninn and quetzalcoatl lol. bizarre. i used to be an existentialist, but now i'm not so sure...
Canoe 5/3/2005 4:44:00 PM Yeah, Jezebel, I'm not sure where my philosophy stands anymore. Kind of Taoist, Deist, Jungian, Joseph Campbell, Alan Watts-ish. My belief systems have been shaken up quite a bit over the years by weird events like the one above.
