Sounds in my head when I try to sleep... USMC0705 |
Alright, this is kinna weird, and difficult to explain, so just bear with me. I'll try to be more specific if I get questions asking me to clear things up. Until then, I'll explain as best I can.
This is a really weird thing that's happened to me since about 8th grade (2001), and just happened again last night, prompting me to ask USM about it.
Sometimes when I'm trying to sleep, I'll be woken up by this weird sound in my head (I'm almost certain it's not audible, because it doesn't echo like most things in my room, and my cat and rabbits hardly react, except to my motion), accompanied by a weird feeling that I can only describe as like something metallic coursing through my head and making it feel lighter. There's no pain. If my eyes are closed, I also see an expanding, almost instantaneous flash of white or off-white, and once it was a tie-dye sort of pattern of colors.
Most of the time when this occurs, my head will flinch involuntary of its own accord, like one might expect with, say, mild electrical shock. Usually it will wake me up, and sometimes it makes me ultra tired.
The sound is best described as a mix between a high-pitched screech and the sort of techno sound one might think of when imagining the noises you hear in The Matrix when Neo gets sent in to the program thingy the first time (sorry for the corny reference, it's the only thing I can think of similar to this), and it lasts something like half a second. Once summer before last, there were two in quick consecutive order.
What is this? Is there something wrong with my head? Is it paranormal, or can it be more mundanely explained? It's really got me wondering.

Been there, indeed. I remember the old adage, "Empty stomach and a full head." Kills me, especially when I have to get up at four AM. Write on, USMC.... |

I have the exact same thing. It's always as I'm drifting off to sleep, it feels like a bolt of lightning going through my head or I hear a popping noise almost like a gun shot. It usually makes me wide awake. I've always associated mine with my seizures though I don't know for sure what they are. |

By the way, I asked my neurologist about it one time and got a non-answer. |

That's weird...A couple of times I've been woken up by a deep manly (and scary) voice in my head shouting "BOO"...It scared the poop out of me. |

Hmmm.... I don't think that's ever happened to me. It might be just a subconscious thing you're doing in that relaxed state. Sometimes just as I'm drifting off to sleep, I hear this loud whisper in my head saying my name and it scares me to death and wakes me up. Maybe it's kinda like that. |

I get the whisper a lot, too, though I never get scared cuz I'm 100% certain it's my grammie. :) USMC0705 |

first off, nothing is wrong with your head, second off, this is nothing more than hypnogogic sleep patterns. Hypnagogic or hypnopompic hallucinations are visual, tactile, auditory, or other sensory events, usually brief but occasionally prolonged, that occur at the transition from wakefulness to sleep (hypnagogic) or from sleep to wakefulness (hypnopompic). The affected individual may hear sounds that aren't there and/or see illusions. These visual and auditory illusions are very vivid and may be bizarre or disturbing to the victims.
People report being fully awake and aware but completely paralyzed. Sometimes they see a strange light. Most often there is pervasive fear, sometimes so strong that people are sure they are about to die. Other parts of their hallucination, which may include people, animals, parts of objects, or just shapes, have a mysteriously nightmarish quality.
The hallucinations are quite vivid and specific. People visualize intruders in their bedroom; they see someone coming through the window, they hear footsteps getting closer and closer and they fear they would be murdered in their bed. Some victims see frightening stranger walk in and out of their bedroom.
This phenomenon also can occur in individuals who do not suffer from narcolepsy, particularly in children.
